Similar Transactions is an astonishing true story about the unsolved cold case kidnapping and murder of Michelle Denise Anderson in Knoxville, Tennessee, and convicted serial rapist Larry Lee Smith, the last person known to be with Michelle on the night of her disappearance. Carelessly and mistakenly labeled a runaway by the Knoxville Police detective who failed to investigate her disappearance as a possible kidnapping, Michelle was never seen alive again.

Investigative writer and clinical social worker, Thelma Paulsen, was living in Knoxville when Michelle Anderson went missing. Years later Paulsen picks up the cold trail of the long-forgotten and still unresolved case in Knoxville when she has a chance encounter with her old professor, famed forensic anthropologist Dr. Bill Bass, the former director of the University of Tennessee’s Forensic Anthropology Center (FAC), dubbed The Body Farm. In 2009, as a result of the Paulsen’s tenacious efforts, the cold case of Michelle Anderson is reopened by the Knoxville Police Department.

Paulsen discovers other victims — the Similar Transactions — of Larry Lee Smith, as well. Nine known victims ; three convictions; one set of skeletal remains. If you ever wondered about that stranger that your mother warned you about, this is your man.
